Q&A with Emma Donovan
My name is Emma; I'm a dreamer and a doer - behind the yellow door and in my own life. I’m always on the lookout for ways to develop the business and my own character, which can be challenging at times; but I stay busy and inspired so I don't stagnate.
What is your position in the YDC team?
Co-founder, chief energy bunny and organiser.
How would you describe your role?
I often think of it as a glacier… solid, dependable, but constantly shifting. In the past six months I’ve handed over quite a bit to Ash, our account manager, and Shae, our copywriter, so that I can focus on new client relationships and business development, but there are still just never enough hours in the day!
When did you start working at YDC?
What part of your job do you enjoy most?
Having a role to play in developing bright, young talent and being the go-to person for so many amazing clients.
What part of your role do you find the most challenging?
Finding the balance between working on the business and working in the business; I still write articles, come up with marketing strategies and liaise with clients every day, but also try to allocate time to enhance our service offering.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the YDC team?
Exactly that – being part of a team. In fact, it’s more like a family. Each and every person we’ve hired adds so much value, in both a professional and personal capacity.
What specific project/campaign did you/do you enjoy working on most?
That’s a tough one, but @home is probably my favourite. I love working with Andre Jansen, head of digital and our point of contact, and being involved in multiple aspects of their marketing.
What do you do when you’re stuck for inspiration?
In summer I go for a long swim in the Sea Point pool, and in winter I usually go for a brisk walk along the promenade to soak up the sea air and clear my head.
What is your pre-work routine?
A typical morning starts with Pilates or a run on the mountain, a raw juice, wholesome breakfast and a walk along Bree Street from my parking bay to the office.
If you could be any superhero, who would you be and why?
I had to “crowd source” this answer. Suggestions from the team include Iceman from Shae (“If you think about Iceman's power, he's basically a near-unstoppable force who cannot be killed unless by extremely powerful cosmic means. Understanding the nature of his powers and how much potential he still hasn't even tapped into, he's incredibly strong. I don't mean that you're cold!) and Cat Woman, Jessica Jones and Elektra from Ant!
What’s your favourite way to spend a weekend?
It’s all about balance – so a surf, run and game of tennis; time in bed with tea and a book; lots of gorgeous food and wine; theatre or a movie; and QT with both friends and family!
What music do you like to listen to while working?
I’m not a great multi-tasker, so I tend to work without music unless I’m doing mundane admin tasks! In which case I usually ask someone at the office for suggestions.
Introvert or extrovert?
Extrovert all the way.
Cats or dogs?
Dogs – as long as they are Labradors or border collies!
Shoes or barefoot?
Barefoot – especially if I’m on the beach or a lush green lawn on a summer’s day.
What’s your favourite spot on or near Bree Street?
Bean There Coffee and Honest Chocolate – for the quality of their artisan treats, their accomplished and friendly staff, cosy spaces and proximity to our office!
