Q&A with Anthony Horne

Q&A with Anthony Horne image

It was clear from a young age that art, drawing and creativity were going to be a major influence in this child’s life. Every chance he got, he would have a pencil, pen or crayon in hand, drawing anything and everything from his favourite animal or anime character to his future house or car.

Hi… I am Anthony, the Harvey Specter of design and creativity at YDC. Unlike the stereotype of the creative person being untidy and free spirited, I am focused, motivated and tidy. Truth be told, I always was and always will be a perfectionist at heart. I enjoy gym, playing and watching sport, watching movies, anime and series, reading random things online, and learning everything I possibly can.

What is your position in the YDC team?
Sith Lord of Design.

How would you describe your role?
I use space, lines, colours, words, shapes and pictures to communicate complex information or ideas in the simplest visual form possible. Art can mean something completely different to each person, my job is to create designs that speak the same message to everyone, while still being visually pleasing.

When did you start working at YDC?
March 2016.

What part of your job do you enjoy most?
As Michael Bierut once said: “…use graphic design to sell things, explain things, make things look better, make people laugh, make people cry, and (every once in a while) change the world.” Basically, the possibility that I can change someone’s life every time I design something.

What part of your role do you find the most challenging?
Being objective and content with the fact the client is always right, even when the force is weak within them.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the YDC team?
The laughs, smiles, friends, variety of work, and the opportunity to work, play and learn while building a career.

What specific project/ campaign did you/ do you enjoy working on most?
Any corporate identity project or branding campaign.

What do you do when you’re stuck for inspiration?
I go super saiyan and release the beast, or just get something to eat.

What is your pre-work routine?
One part gym, two parts traffic, three parts cursing at idiotic drivers and four parts caffeine.

If you could be any superhero, who would you be and why?
Tough one… Charles Xavier (Professor X). Genius intellect, telepathic and telekinetic abilities, and over-powering nature to do good.

What’s your favourite way to spend a weekend?
Blanket, couch, wine, chips, speckled eggs, popcorn, movies, series and spending time with my (soon to be) wife.

What music do you like to listen to while working?
Depends on my mood, but anything from rap, rock and blues, to pop, dance and country.

Introvert or extrovert?

I would have to say predominantly introvert.

Cats or dogs?

Dogs – real dogs, the ones that can’t fit in your microwave.

Shoes or barefoot?

Shoes – from sneakers and boots to lace-ups and slip-ons.

What’s your favourite spot on Bree Street?

Max Bagels – orgasm for your taste buds, that’s all I can say.
